SYNOPSIS
La Habana y después, fragmented novel in three tempos and located in two continents, between the spring of 1994 and the summer of 1997, has Alex as protagonist, a traveler and cosmopolitan artist on vacation, an esthete that satisfies his hedonism traveling always to the Orient and the South. His journeys are of initiation to knowledge, which he is pleased to find in the diverse, exotic and far away. The first tempo “Entronque de caminos”, takes place in the spring of 1994, when Alex goes for the first time to Havana, with his friend Maria. The second tempo, “Yunaisis, la Dragona”, covers the following two years. When Alex returns to Havana, travels to Playas del Este and then to Santiago, what it lasts his ethylic romance with a mulatto from Oriente, a young transvestite who has casted a spell on him. He wants to see Yunaisis above herself, the sign that overthrows the ever-stereotyped of fixed identity and with whom he denies, both succumbed to alcohol, the recruded Special Period. But reality finally prevails over his daydreams and, to forget his sorceress, he will go to another island, the easternmost East, to Cebu, “La Reina del Sur de Filipinas”, which gives the title to the third tempo. The wild and miserable environment in which he will live there, among squatters on the outskirts of Cebu City, will also be abolished by alcohol, in favor of a magical place with the most beautiful colors and shapes. The new connection will now be Elsa, a Cebuian teenager, of androgynous beauty, over whom he will devote his ideal.

Pedro Gandía (1953) es conquense de nacimiento y valenciano de adopción. Y pintor, escultor, fotógrafo, videoartista, poeta, traductor y crítico literario (y puede que alguna otra que desconozcamos). Gandía ha publicado sobre todo poemarios y, en el año 2000, una novela titulada Burdel. Recientemente ha publicado la segunda, La Habana y después, una obra ciertamente peculiar. En sus primeras páginas, un cubano nos cuenta que en su juventud era un mujeriego empedernido y trapicheaba con todo lo que podía. Pasó por varias cárceles y acabó en los Estados Unidos dando clases en la universidad y felizmente casado.. Uno empieza a dudar si se ha equivocado de libro, pero no: colección “Inconfesables!” de la editorial Odisea. El marielito enseguida cede la palabra a un narrador que nos traslada al mes de abril de 1994, cuando dos amigos, Alex y María, visitan por primera vez La Habana y viven situaciones bastante curiosas. Pero el grueso de la novela lo forma el capítulo segundo, titulado Yunaisis, la Dragona. Han pasado quince meses, y Alex, un artista amante de lo exótico, vuelve solo a la capital cubana, donde conoce a Yunaisis, “que así se hace llamar Rafael Trujillo Garrido, un mulato-mulata de diecisiete años y siete meses, un andrógino súper estelar nacido bajo el signo de Sagitario y del Dragón chino, un guajiro-guajira oriental que lo ha hechizado por entero, con su alegría de vivir y sus magias caribeñas”. Yunaisis es una zalamera, pero él la quiere… asu manera. El alcohol magnifica el hechizo que le produce esa joven pantera que pretende convertirse en su ángel de la guarda. Gandía demuestra dominar el habla cubana, que transcribe tal y como suena (“Tú no sabe’ qué yo no sopolto?”), y también la santería yoruba. La relación con Yunaisis se prolongará durante un par de años de visitas periódicas, pero también habrá un Stivens, una Zoraida y otros cuerpos ocasionales. Finalmente, llegaremos al tercer y último capítulo, bastante más breve, La Reina del Sur de Filipinas. Estamos en el verano del 97, y Alex decide viajar al otro extremo del mundo. Y en la isla más oriental del Filipinas, Cebú, seguirá transfigurando ese ideal de belleza que, a la postre, resulta siempre inalcanzable.
